A guided tour behind customized press solutions
Customized press solutions – what does it require, and how do you find the right solution? You can find the answer here, where our technical salesperson, Claus Holm, gives you a guided tour behind a customized solution he recently delivered to a customer. A solution that was tailored so the customer could get the best and most efficient press solution.
What does a customized press solution require?
Have you ever wondered what it takes to create customized press solutions? You can find the answer here.
We asked our technical salesperson, Claus Holm, who gladly took us on a guided tour behind one of his latest customized solutions. A solution that was tailored so the customer could get the best and most efficient press solution.
What was the customer’s challenge?
“Our customer needed a press that could manually press plastic parts together using pressure. The machine had to be accessible to their operators and operable without extensive instruction. In this case, we also had to find a more cost-effective solution, as the customer had a limited budget. We chose a manually operated press, which was subsequently tailored to the customer’s needs.”
How did you solve the customer’s challenge?
“We based our solution on one of our standard solutions from TOX® PRESSOTECHNIK and made some adjustments according to the customer’s needs. We tailored the solution so that any operator can position themselves in front of the machine and operate it without any special safety requirements.”
“The press from TOX in this case is manually operated with a handle. If for some reason you get your fingers in the machine, you are the one operating the press. You can simply stop pulling the handle if you experience something painful. It’s that simple.”
“Additionally, the customer had a requirement for a physical adjustment of the console, which we also handled.”
What adjustments did we make to the solution?
“First and foremost, we found a more cost-effective solution that could be operated manually – a so-called toggle press. Additionally, we milled about 80 mm off the base of the press and placed some threaded mounting holes. All of this, of course, based on specific precision requirements. This way, the customer could bring their adapter system and operate the press solution immediately. The starting point was more or less a standard solution, to which we made some adjustments.”
What does it mean for the customer that we were able to tailor the solution to them?
“The customer did not have the budget to invest in an automated solution. With the manual mechanical press from TOX, they got a customized solution that both suited them price-wise and met their requirements for operation and setup.”
“There simply wasn’t money for a more expensive solution. An automated solution can cost around 100,000 DKK. In this case, we found a manual solution together that meets the customer’s needs and is significantly cheaper.
When does it make sense to invest in automation, and when is manpower better?
“If you have a task where many items need to be made, there is usually room to invest in automation. It’s clear that if you need to produce a larger number of an item, it makes more sense to let an automated solution handle the task. It will make the process both easier, faster, and cheaper.”
“In this case, there are relatively few items, so there wasn’t an economic case for an automated solution. Here, it was cheaper to rely on manpower and a customized solution.
Why was TOX® PRESSOTECHNIK chosen as the supplier for the task?
“TOX fundamentally works with clinching and various presses. TOX has a very broad range of press solutions. They can solve everything from the manual toggle press to machines that run with electrically driven spindles and can press over 100 tons.
“With TOX, we can build solutions from the many elements in their range. The products can be assembled in different ways, so we can create solutions that fit the customers’ needs.”
“In general, products from TOX are of very high quality and extremely well-documented. At TOX, there are no shortcuts or easy solutions. Everything is very detailed and thoroughly worked through. TOX is characterized by their quality, precision, and documentation.”
Is it generally good to have a wide range of products for customized solutions?
“A broad range means there is something to choose from. It allows for discussing solutions with customers because there are so many solution options. It also makes it easier to find the solution that is either best, cheapest, most flexible, or whatever is needed.”
“When you sit with a customer and need to solve a task, there will always be nice to have and need to have.
The customer usually starts with what they would like, and it always ends with what they need. In a huge range like the one at TOX, it is almost always possible to find exactly the solution the customers are looking for. We have the opportunity to start with the large range and then tailor it together with the customer. It’s something we do best at Hans Buch.”
