Find the right pressure gauge with the right questions
Do you want to be sure to find the perfect pressure gauge for your application? Then ask yourself a series of questions that can ensure you are fully aware of the requirements for your new solution.
Our product manager will guide you through the questions he usually asks customers when helping them find the perfect pressure gauge. With these questions, you can be fully prepared on:
- What medium the pressure gauge should measure
- What type of pressure you need to measure
- What output the pressure gauge should have
- What media and possibly connector you need
All of this will ensure that you end up with the most efficient pressure gauge for your application.
What medium do you need to measure?
Which pressure gauge you need depends primarily on the medium you need to measure. Should it measure pressure in air/neutral gases or liquids? Is it air, neutral gas, water, diesel, or something entirely different? The medium that the pressure gauge should measure places different demands on, among other things, the choice of materials for your pressure gauge.
Different materials are more or less resistant to different air/gas types and liquids. It all depends on the medium. The efficiency of your pressure gauge therefore largely depends on the choice of materials in relation to the medium you need to measure pressure in.
What type of pressure do you need to measure?
The choice of pressure gauge also depends on the pressure you want to measure. This applies to both pressure type and pressure range, both of which are crucial for determining which pressure gauge will be most effective for your specific application.
When it comes to pressure type, you need to know whether you need to measure relative pressure, absolute pressure, differential pressure, or vacuum. Most often, you will need to measure relative pressure, but in daily work with pressure measurement, we also see the other pressure types. To choose the right pressure gauge, you also need to ask yourself what pressure range the solution should be able to measure within. This is crucial for how much the pressure gauge needs to withstand. A pressure of, for example, 10 or 600 bar requires a completely different pressure gauge than a pressure of, for example, 100 Pa.
What output should the pressure gauge have?
When you need to find your pressure gauge, you also need to know what output your pressure gauge should have. Is it, for example, an analog output, fieldbus, or an on/off contact or a completely different output. You only need a pressure gauge with an analog output signal if you want to constantly monitor the pressure development (continuous measurement). If, on the other hand, you just want to be sure that you have a certain pressure, an analog output signal is not necessary, and we can settle for an on/off signal (pressure switch).
Whether your pressure gauge should have an analog output signal or a digital on/off signal depends on the measurement you need to make. If you need continuous measurement, you should consider what type of output signal your transmitter should have. If, on the other hand, you need to know that you have a given pressure, a pressure switch can handle the task. If it should only be visual, a manometer can do the job.
What media and connector do you need?
Last but not least, you should consider what media connection you need. Here you can ask yourself:
- Should it have internal or external thread?
- What size thread do I need?
- Should it have a flush front membrane to avoid dirt in the pressure gauge?
- Should it be with DIN-A connector, M12 connector, direct with cable connection, or something entirely different?
Remember the questions and find the most efficient pressure gauge
Finding the perfect pressure gauge can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. Especially if you want to find the solution that is most effective for your specific application. However, it becomes a bit easier if you remember the questions the next time you are looking for a new solution. The questions help you focus on the requirements for your new pressure gauge. This will give you a much greater chance of finding the most effective solution for your application.
