Food comes into contact with many materials and objects during production, processing, storage, as well as preparation and serving, before it is finally consumed. All these materials and objects are subject to strict legal requirements and control regulations to ensure that the materials do not affect food quality or, in the worst case, pose a health risk to the end consumer.

As a food producer, you need a supplier who is knowledgeable about these approvals. Especially because the requirements for production facilities and materials are revised as we become more aware of both contamination, unwanted chemicals, and limit values.

At Hans Buch, we want to offer a safe, secure, and uncomplicated access to food-approved components. Therefore, you are always guaranteed that our range of food contact materials complies with the latest regulations and legal requirements.

The most important requirements for food contact materials

What does the law say?

As mentioned, there are strict requirements for materials that come into contact with food. In Denmark and the EU, the framework regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 applies. In essence, the principles of (EC) No. 1935/2004 are that all materials in direct contact with food must never release substances that can be harmful to humans or that can degrade the quality of the food.

Specifically, (EC) No. 1935/2004 states that food contact materials must not:

  • release substances into food in amounts that may pose a risk to human health,
  • cause an unacceptable change in the composition of the food or deterioration of its taste or smell.

Furthermore, the regulation establishes:

  • specific rules for active and intelligent materials,
  • rules for labeling, including an indication for use,
  • rules for documentation of compliance and traceability.

Look for the labeling

Food-approved components can come with a variety of labels, all of which in one way or another indicate that the component is suitable and/or certified to come into contact with food. At Hans Buch, we sell fittings and hoses from the renowned Tierre Group, whose products carry a range of different labels.

“The Glass and Fork Symbol”
The most widespread form of labeling is the universal glass and fork symbol. The symbol means that the responsible company or manufacturer has assessed that the product bearing the label meets the requirements for food contact materials. The label is not an approval in itself.

The NSF Certificate
NSF International is an independent, accredited American organization that tests and certifies food and consumer products and systems. The NSF mark is your assurance that the product has been tested by one of the most respected, independent certification organizations.

The ICIM Certificate
ICIM S.p.A. is an independent, Italian certification organization specializing in the certification of engineering and mechanics. In addition to issuing certifications for components, the organization also certifies and trains companies and personnel.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions

Incorrect use or improper handling of food contact materials and process equipment for food production can damage the equipment and/or, in the worst case, result in the transfer of unwanted and dangerous substances to the food. Examples of this can be equipment used at incorrect temperatures or not suitable for use with corrosive liquids.

Therefore, food contact materials should only be used according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. In general, it is important to obtain and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use to ensure that the equipment is used or installed correctly.

Traceability of food contact materials

The strict requirements for food contact materials also apply to traceability and documentation. The purpose of traceability is to ensure that products can be easily and effectively recalled in case of defects or similar issues.

At Hans Buch, we guarantee that all our food contact materials have been assigned a batch number, so each component can be traced throughout the supply chain.
