When small measurement fluctuations have a big impact
Fuel cells are sensitive to temperature and humidity. If measurements are not accurate enough, this can affect plant performance, component service life and overall operational reliability. This makes the choice of instrumentation an important part of working with PtX applications, where measurement data must be suitable for active use in both monitoring and documentation.
Humidity, temperature and dew point must be considered together
In a PtX application with fuel cells, measuring just one parameter is not enough. The customer needed accurate measurements of humidity, temperature and dew point to document the right instrumentation for larger plants. The solution therefore involved selecting a complete sensor configuration that met the application’s requirements.
How to approach instrumentation
A good solution starts with the application. Before selecting products, you should clarify which measurements are critical to the process, where the measurement points should be located and how the data will be used in subsequent documentation. In this project, Hans Buch advised the customer on the selection of E+E sensors for the application: EE23 for humidity and temperature measurement and EE371 for dew point measurement.
- Clarify which process parameters affect fuel cell performance
- Assess humidity, temperature and dew point measurement needs together
- Select sensors that meet the application’s technical requirements
- Document the measurement basis so the solution can be used in larger plants
- Seek technical advice early so instrumentation is selected based on the process — not just product data
Better monitoring and stronger documentation
With the right instrumentation, the customer gains a more accurate basis for monitoring the application. The solution contributes to better performance and longer fuel cell service life, while the instrumentation is documented for use in larger PtX plants.
