Hans Buch Steam Optimization

Reduce fuel consumption by optimising the feedwater temperature. Hans Buch Steam Optimization is a retrofit solution that controls the temperature from the atmospheric condenser and reduces the need for additional steam.

When the feedwater is too cold, fuel consumption increases

On many ships, the outlet temperature from the atmospheric condenser is too low and can sometimes be as low as around 30 °C. The temperature should be around 80-90 °C.

When the feedwater is too cold, additional steam is required to heat it. This means higher fuel consumption per tonne of steam produced.

Hans Buch Steam Optimization controls the temperature automatically and helps make better use of the energy in the steam system.

As low as 30 °C
The temperature can be significantly lower than desired.

Less additional steam
By keeping the feedwater at the right temperature.

80-90 °C
The recommended temperature range according to the documentation.

Automatic control of the feedwater temperature

Hans Buch Steam Optimization is a retrofit solution with closed-loop control that helps maintain the feedwater temperature at the desired level.

The system measures the temperature at several points in the process and controls it via a three-way valve and a PLC control system with HMI. This reduces the need to supply additional steam to heat the feedwater.

Steam Optimization with PLC control system, three-way valve and temperature measurement

The solution consists of

The Steam Optimization solution comprises components for measuring, managing and controlling the feedwater temperature.

Three-way valve
For system control.

Hans Buch PLC control system with HMI
Control unit with a user interface for managing the solution.

3 temperature sensors with local display
Temperature measurement at several points in the system.

3 welded thermowells
For installing the temperature sensors.

Is the temperature where it should be?

A feedwater temperature that is too low can lead to unnecessary steam and fuel consumption. Steam Optimization is a retrofit solution that can help regulate the temperature and make better use of the energy in the steam system.
