Fredericia Havn
New track solution following a fire in the port area
Following a fire in the port area in Fredericia, the existing track was so badly damaged that reconstruction was necessary. In collaboration with ADP A/S, Rambøll and the supplier Edilon, Hans Buch delivered a new track solution comprising five crossings along with 1,440 metres of rails, sleepers and fastenings.
A well-executed project in which cooperation between all parties involved worked flawlessly.
When a fire made reconstruction necessary
The project began with an urgent and specific challenge: the tracks in the port area in Fredericia had been so badly damaged by a fire that they had to be rebuilt. This created a need for a solution that could not only replace the existing infrastructure, but also meet the particular requirements a port environment places on wear resistance, axle loads and maintenance.
In practice, the task was therefore about more than simply supplying materials. It was about finding a solution that could perform reliably in a harsh operating environment while supporting ongoing traffic in the port area.
A track solution developed for a demanding port environment
ADP A/S Fredericia and Rambøll jointly developed the track reconstruction project, bringing Hans Buch and track supplier Edilon on board for the new solution. The supply comprised five crossings along with rails, sleepers and fastenings. The first four crossings were supplied as standard LCS-350, while the fifth and longest crossing, measuring 168 metres, was built using LCS 350CT Heavy Duty.
This is an important detail, as the heavy-duty solution is designed for high loads. According to the original case study, the system can accommodate a permissible axle load of 110 tonnes, withstand a harsh environment and offer low maintenance requirements and vibration damping. This makes the solution relevant not only for Fredericia Havn, but also as a reference for similar projects in Denmark.

The result was a more robust solution for future operations
By June 2019, four of the five crossings had been completed, and in September 2019 the final 168-metre-long crossing was ready. The port area was thus operational again, with a new track solution better suited to the environment and loads than before.
The strength of this case study is that the result is not just a reconstruction. It is also an upgrade. The customer received:
- five new crossings
- 1,440 metres of rails, along with sleepers and fastenings
- a heavy-duty solution for high loads
- a system with low maintenance requirements and vibration damping
This makes the case study about more than simply repairing damage. It shows how close collaboration between the customer, consultant, supplier and Hans Buch can help establish a solution that also looks to the future.
