With an upgrade to LED lighting, a quick return on your investment is achieved. This is due to a drastic reduction in your energy consumption, leading to a reduction in your CO2 emissions. LED lights also increase safety and protect the environment.

Why is LED the best technology for lighting?

LED (light emitting diode) is a technology that has a number of properties that make them competitive against fluorescent tubes and incandescent bulbs:

  • LED is better for the environment:
LED lighting does not contain mercury like fluorescent tubes do
  • LED is more energy efficient:
LED uses less energy to emit the same amount of light (lumens). According to the Danish Energy Agency, an LED tube can emit 100-155 lumens/watt, whereas a fluorescent tube only emits 58-144 lumens/watt.
  • LED has a longer lifespan and requires less maintenance:
According to the Danish Energy Agency, an LED tube lasts 20,000-60,000 hours, while a fluorescent tube lasts 10,000-20,000 hours.

Overall, an upgrade to LED provides great benefits for the economy, climate, environment, and safety. You can read more about this in the following sections.

Why is LED lighting a good economic investment?

You get a short payback period on your investment in LED lighting. Large energy savings and longer lifespan ensure a quick economic gain with an upgrade to LED. In many cases, the investment is recouped in less than a year.

How does LED lighting ensure a significant reduction in CO2 emissions?

The lower energy consumption will mean a reduction in CO2 emissions. The extent naturally depends on your power source for your lighting. In many industries, diesel generators are still the most common power source. Here, the significantly lower energy consumption will result in a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

How does LED lighting contribute to higher safety?

The better durability and longer lifespan result in less maintenance of the lighting. This can therefore reduce the safety risk for your employees when there are fewer maintenance tasks in hard-to-reach places. With LED, the risk of inhaling toxic fumes from mercury in the event of accidents and disposal, as is the case with fluorescent tubes, is also prevented.

Return after seven months and reduction of 150 tons of CO2 per year

A customer at Hans Buch Marine upgraded their 1246 fluorescent tubes and 162 incandescent bulbs to LED lighting. The investment in Hans Buch MarineLux was recouped after seven months, and the customer achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions of 150,800 kg. This is because the LED lighting achieved a power saving of 218,600 kilowatt-hours annually.

In other words, investing in LED lighting is a low-hanging fruit, says Palle Wredstrøm, division manager at Hans Buch Marine:

“Upgrading to LED is the best economic and most environmentally friendly way to reduce your electricity consumption while significantly reducing your CO2 emissions.

LED will reduce your electricity consumption by more than 50% and operate for more than 10 years from installation. Therefore, it will also lead to improved safety, as you do not need to replace burnt-out fluorescent tubes or incandescent bulbs placed high up or in hard-to-reach places.

Why choose Hans Buch as a supplier of LED lights?

MarineLux from Hans Buch withstands harsh vibrations and high temperatures

Hans Buch MarineLux can be used in many contexts, but unlike the most common LED types, our LED lighting is particularly robust, making them suitable in extreme environments with high temperatures and many vibrations – for example, in the maritime industry and offshore industry.

MarineLux has high operational reliability and quality

A special feature of the LED tube from Hans Buch MarineLux is that our LED tubes are equipped with 2x drivers – one at each end of the tube. Together with a generally high quality of all products, this contributes to a very high operational reliability and quality of your lighting. Therefore, we can guarantee a lifespan of our LED tubes of more than 70,000 hours.

Hans Buch offers guidance and installation of LED lighting

When you shop at Hans Buch, you have a business partner throughout the process. We provide help and guidance in the start-up phase, and with our skilled technicians, you get help with installation and disposal of the environmentally hazardous waste that fluorescent tubes constitute.

We also help calculate the effects of replacing conventional lighting in the form of, for example, fluorescent tubes and incandescent bulbs with LED technology, so you are aware from the start of the great benefits for both the climate and the economy by upgrading to LED.

EU ban on fluorescent light sources

End of mercury-containing fluorescent tubes

From August 23, 2023, the well-known types of fluorescent tubes T5 and T8 will be phased out. After this, it will no longer be legal to place new units on the market in the EU.

This is because fluorescent tubes contain mercury, and these will no longer be exempt under the RoHS directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment). The repeal makes it possible to only invest in LED lights.

Danish Energy Agency: Upgrading to LED provides great savings for both emissions and economy

Mercury causes serious damage to both humans and the environment. The phasing out of T5 and T8 therefore results in a significant reduction in environmental pollution, but at the same time, large economic savings are achieved.

According to the Danish Energy Agency, EU countries are expected to save 2.9 tons of mercury emissions and save 220 billion DKK in reduced energy consumption and fewer replacements of bulbs and lamps by 2035.
