Lack of training is the fourth sin in Crowcon’s series on the seven deadly sins in gas detection. Education is an important aspect – not only to ensure that the equipment is used correctly, but also to ensure that it is maintained properly.

What you need to know about training in gas detection

Different gases pose different dangers

Different gases behave differently. Some gases are flammable, some are oxidizing, and others are toxic. Toxic gases can pose an immediate danger, and even at low concentrations, they can cause long-term health problems. Other gases are both flammable and highly toxic, such as hydrogen sulfide.

It also varies whether the gases rise into the air or fall to the ground. Methane, for example, is lighter than air and will therefore rise. Other gases are heavier than air and will fall to the ground. The placement of your gas detection equipment therefore depends on which gases you want to detect.

Maintenance

Cleaning: When it comes to cleaning gas detectors, it is important to know that you should keep your gas detectors far away from cleaning agents containing silicones. These can contaminate the instrument’s sensors and give incorrect readings. Hydrocarbon-based lubricants (silicones) should therefore be avoided at all times.

Bump test and calibration: Bump test and calibration must be performed correctly and at regular intervals to ensure that the equipment is in proper condition. Depending on the detector you have, automated systems are available that can perform bump tests and calibration, making the procedure very simple. The best automation systems can manage the process and store the results. Only a little training is needed to use automatic tests in the system, but it does not eliminate the need for training.

Service and maintenance: Similarly, it is important that the service and maintenance of gas detectors are handled by a certified and service-trained technician who understands the equipment and knows how to ensure smooth operation.
