Deadly Sin No. 5 – Other Pitfalls
Introduction to other pitfalls is the fifth sin in Crowcon’s series on the 7 deadly sins in gas detection. Most work environments where gas detection is required are already dangerous enough. Often, the use of a gas detector is the cause of a non-gas-related accident, but fortunately, improvements in a range of gas detection technologies mean these can be avoided. Here we provide you with 3 pitfalls and how you can avoid them.
3 pitfalls in gas detection
1) External display
Fixed gas detectors should be placed where they will detect gas leaks as quickly as possible. This often means they need to be placed high, in ducts, under walkways, or other inaccessible places in the workplace. Ladders may be necessary to read a detector, but if you use a gas detector with an external display, this danger can be removed. The display can be placed closer to the ground, where it is easier and safer to read, while the detector is still positioned in the best place to detect the gas.
2) Plug & play sensors
A risk associated with the maintenance of fixed detectors is calibration. To calibrate a sensor, which should be calibrated at least every 6 months, a test gas must be applied close to the sensor. This means the gas must be close to the detector head. For the most dangerous gases, this is dangerous in itself, but the sensors’ difficult-to-access locations increase the danger. The latest gas detector technology uses Plug & play sensors. These can be quickly and easily removed without opening the detector. This allows the calibration of the sensor to be performed in a safe environment away from danger, where the gas can be used safely. After calibration, the sensor is reinserted into the detector.
3) Temporary area monitoring
Monitoring with detectors connected by cables can also be risky. Temporary monitoring may therefore be appropriate if work is to be carried out in an area that is not monitored. It is a flexible solution and provides protection here and now while being wireless for use in ATEX zones.
Avoid putting your safety at risk
Gas detectors play an important role in keeping you and your workplace safe. There is no reason not to choose a temporary and flexible solution when the opportunity is there. Remember now; It could help reduce the number of accidents caused by gas at your workplace.
